Our days in La Fortuna were amazing !

Tuesday we visited an organic farm in Chachagua . Helena welcomed us warmly and explained us a lot about the different projects they are leading in their farm.

To give you an insight the 2 main ecological projects that they are leading in addition to the organic farm are:

-A biodigestor which is a system which consists in using the trees and the animals  excrement in order to produce gas. Their goal is to be 100% gas auto sufficient by 2017.

-A water harvest project to reuse the rain water in the farm.

Their farm is one of the very few  5 stars sustainable farms in Costa Rica.

As well as teaching us about their farm and different project, Helena taught us how to cook tortillas and empañadas. We really had a great time with her and her family.

Yesterday we went for a hike of 10 hours in the volcano Arenal, we could swim in the green lagoon which is located in the earth of the crater and we ended the day in some very nice and natural hot springs. The hiking part was not that easy but we really enjoyed ourselves ending up climbing in the volcano.

Today we are travelling to an other farm near by the capital (well for Costaricanses near by means more or less 3 hours by bus).

Nos derniers jours à la Fortuna ont été genial !

Mardi nous avons visité une ferme organique à Chachagua. Helena nous a accueillie chaleureusement et nous a donné beaucoup d’explication sur sa ferme organique et les diffèrents projets qu’elle et son mari mènent.

Pour vous donner une idée, les 2 principaux projets qu’ils mènent à côté de la ferme organique sont :

-Un biodigestor qui est un système qui consiste a utiliser les arbres et excréments d’annimaux pour produire du gaz. Leur objectif et de devenir complètement autonome au niveau de leur ressources de gaz d’ici 2017.

-Un système de récupération des eaux de pluies pour alimenter toute la ferme en eau.

De plus nous avons passé un agréable moment avec Héléna, en effet elle nous a appris à faire des tortillas et des empeñadas.

Hier nous avons fait une randonnée de 10h00 au volcan Arénal, nous avons nagé dans le lagoon vert qui se situe au cœur du cratère. Nous avons fini la journée dans des eaux thermales plutôt fort sympathique…  La randonnée n’était pas des plus facile mais nous nous sommes éclaté a nous retrouver à escalader un pan du volcan.

Aujourd’hui nous sommes sur la route pour partir dans une autre ferme (Farami) près de la capitale (enfin pour les Costaricains près c’est à plus ou moins 3h00 de bus)

Hello everyone, here we are again with some news. We couldn’t post anything due to some connexion problems. It’s our last day in the Villas Mastatal, a farm in which we stayed for two weeks. The place is incredible, the nature is stunning, there is a national park (la cangrega) right next to the farm. The people in the village are all really kind as well as the people in the farm.

Since there is 3 other organic farms in the village we could interview the four of them to get a lot more information about organic agriculture.  Moreover we also learned a lot while working in the farm that hosted us. We planted; made compost, worked in the garden, digged a frog pool, painted…it was a really interesting experience.

Time is flying here. During our free time we walked quite a lot in the surroundings and in the national park. We have been to at least 4 waterfalls, seen many different and beautiful birds (colibris, toucans…).

So…for our last day in the farm and luckily not the last one in Costa rica we will go back to one of the waterfall!!

Tomorrow we are going to La Fortuna to interview more farms and see more of the beautiful nature.

Bonjour tout le monde, nous revoilà avec quelques nouvelles. Nous ne pouvions pas écrire sur le blog Durant les deux dernières semaines à cause de problèmes de connexion. C’est notre dernier jour à la Villas Mastatal, une ferme dans laquelle nous sommes restées deux semaines.

L’endroit est incroyable, la nature est magnifique. Il y a un parc national juste à coté de la ferme (La Cangrega). Les gens du village ainsi que ceux de la ferme sont tous très chaleureux.

De plus, vu qu’il y avait 3 autres fermes organiques aux alentours nous avont pu interviewer 4 fermes au total. Nous avons aussi beaucoup appris en travaillant dans la ferme qui nous a accueillie. Nous avons planté, fait du compost, creusé une petite marre pour les grenouilles, paint…ce fut une experience très enrichissante.

Le temps passé très très vite ici. Pendant notre temps libre nous nous sommes beaucoup baladées dans les environs, et dans le parc national. Nous avons été à au moins 4 cascades, vu pleins d’oiseaux magnifques (Toucans, Colibri), des serpents…

Et donc pour notre dernier jour à la ferme mais heureusement pas le dernier au Costa Rica nous allons retourner à une de nos cascades préféré pour profiter!!

Demain nous partons pour La Fortuna pour interviewer plus de fermes et voir plus de paysages mangnifiques.

Dear all !

We arrived last Friday night at the organic farm in Matalas.

We are working with few other volunteers from all over the world which are really nice ! Our host are also nice and we are improving a lot our Spanish here.
We already did farm work such as extracting sugar juice from the sugar canes, digging the ground to evacuate water, planting cocoa... We also participated in decorating the farm by creating a mosaic wall... Yesterday we woke up at 4am to hike in the mountain it was wonderful ! The view was breath taking while the sunrise!

As the internet connexion is really limited here we won't be able to post articles for 2 weeks but we will come back with a lot of knowledge to share on this blog !

Nous sommes arrivé vendredi soir dans la ferme organique de Matalas.

Nous travaillons avec d'autres volontaires internationaux qui sont très sympas ! Nos hôtes sont aussi très sympas et nous améliorons vraiment notre espagnol.
Nous avons commencé le travail à la ferme comme l'extraction du sucre de cannes, creuser des rigole pour irriguer l'eau, nous avons planté du cacao... Nous avons également participé à la décoration de la ferme en faisant une fresque en mosaïque. Hier nous nous sommes levé à 4h00 du matin pour aller faire une randonnée dans la montagne, La vue était magnifique surtout lors du levé du soleil ! 

La connexion internet à la ferme n'est pas très bonne, nous ne pourrons malheureusement pas poster d'articles pendant les 2 prochaines semaines mais nous serons de retour avec beaucoup d'informations intéressantes à vous partager sur ce blog !

Hello !

Today we interviewed Carolina, one of the nicest women we ever met. Carolina  is running her own ecological accommodation resort in Playa Hermosa. She is hosting people in  wooden houses in her garden. Everything is ecological and eco friendly (even the cleaning products she uses) . She is also growing some vegetables (pineapple, ginger, pumpkin, mango...) organically. Moreover Carolina is a herbalist therapist. We interviewed her to know more about her lifestyle, why she chose to eat and live organic. It was really interesting and Carolina gave us really interesting answers. She offered us an organic mosquitos repulsive which she made in front of us with coconut oil and few different essential oils. Carolina even took the time to show us around her garden and to share with us some Costa Ricans organic recipe which will be published later on in this blog. 

Also Our Day in the National Park Manuel Antonio last tuesday was amazing !!! We saw many animals, monkeys stealing tourist's food and even sunscreen!  you can watch the video we made of our journey in youtube

Aujourd'hui nous avons interviewer Carolina, l'une des personnes les plus gentilles que nous ayons rencontré. Carolina est gérante de chambres d'hôtes écologiques à Playa Hermosa. Tout est écologique et éco friendly (même les produits d'entretiens). Carolina fait aussi pousser des fruits et légumes (ananas, gingembre, potiron, mangue...) de manière organique. De plus Carolina est herboriste thérapeute. Nous l'avons interviewer pour en savoir plus sur sa philosophie de vie, pourquoi a-t-elle choisi de manger et de vivre de manière organique. Ce fut un échange ressourçant et très intéressant, Carolina a pris le temps de répondre pleinement à nos questions. Elle nous a offert un répulsif à moustiques organique qu'elle a confectionné sous nos yeux avec de l'huile de coco et d'autres huiles essentielles. Carolina nous a également fait visiter son jardin et nous a partagé une recette Costa Ricaine Organique (que nous publierons plus tard sur ce blog). 

De plus notre journnée au Parc national Manuel Antonio mardi dernier était superbe ! Nous avons vu pleins d'animaux surprenants, des singes qui volaient de la nouriture et même de la crème solaire aux touristes! Vous pouvez voir la vidéo de notre journée sur youtube

Hello everyone,

We are back we some news, we had some connexion

problems and got very busy moving from San josé to Manuel Antonio. Here in Manuel Antonio we were expecting to visit a friend from our previous Airbnb who is starting an organic farming but it didn't work out finally...however we went directly to another farmer who accepted to be interview and got a great insight into a farm starting with organic agriculture.

Moreover Manuel Antonio is a small but a really beautiful city, we had a great time in the sea and met a Tico that taught us how to surf! The ambiance in the hostel is also very great, there is always people to be around with! 

Today we are going to visit the national park and hope to see many nice animals there. Later in the afternoon we will leave to playa Hermosa close to Jaco to continue interviewing farms.

Bonjour tout le monde,

Nous revoici avec quelques ouvelles, nous avons eu des problèmes de connexion and nous étions très occupées par le voyage de San José jusqu'à Manuel Antonio. A Manuel Antonion nous voulions rencontrer une amie de notre précédent Airbnb qui commence une ferme organic mais ça n'a malheureusement pas pu se faire...cependant nous sommes allé directement voir un autre fermier qui a accepté de nous rencontrer. Nous avons pu avoir de bonne base sur l'agriculture organique. 

De plus, Manuel Antonion est une petite ville très très bellle, nous avons passé un bon moment à la plage and avons rencontré un Tico qui nous a appris à faire du surf. L'ambiance à l'hostel est super, il y a toujours des gens avec qui être!

Aujour'dhui nous allons visiter le parc national et espérons y voir pleins d'animaux différent. Plus tard dans l'après midi nous allons partir pour la playa Hermosa près de Jaco pour continuer à interviewer des fermes.

Hi everyone !

Yesterday we continued to work on our project and we went to visit the volcano Poás in the afternoon. When we got there we were quite disapointed because there was a lot of fog, so we couldn't see much (see the picture)... Fortunately after a little while the fog disappeared and we could see the magnificance of the volcan cratere.

Hier nous avons continuer de travailler sur notre projet puis l'après-midi nous sommes allé visité le Volcan Poás. Lorsque nous sommes arrivé nous étions un peu déçue car il y avait beacuoup de brouillard et que nous ne pouvions pas voir le cratère (voir photo)... Heureusement après un petit moment le brouillard à disparu et nous avons pu voir la magnificance du cratère.

Today we went to an organic grossery shop it was really interresting, we try an organic juice which was delicious ! Tomorrow we will go to a bigger one and we will interview the C.E.O.

Aujourd'hui nous sommes allé dans un super marché organique, c'était vraiment intérressant, nous avons goûté un jus de fruit organique... délicieux ! Demain nous irons dans un plus grand supermarché organique pour interviewer le C.E.O.

Today we had the interview with Roberto Azofeifa, it was really interresting and we got a better understanding of the situation here in Costa Rica regarding Organic farming. You will find attached to this post the script of the interview we had with him. You will find there many actual and interesting information about the topic. 

Moreover we spent the whole day working on the report and the script since the weather was still not that good...

Tonight, crepes with another traveller living in the house with us. yummy!

Aujourd'hui nous avons eu l'interview avec Roberto Azofeita, ce fut très interessant et ça nous à beaucoup aidé pour avoir plus de connaissance sur la situation au Costa Rica en relation avec l'agriculture organique. Vous trouverez attaché à ce post une version en anglais de la conversation que l'on a eu avec Roberto. Vous y trouverez plein d'information actuelle et interessante sur le sujet que nous étudions. 

De plus, nous avons passez toute la journée à travailler sur le rapport et le script car le beau temps n'était toujours pas au rendez vous. 

Mais un peu de consolation pour ce soir vu qu'on fait une soirée crèpes avec un autre voyageur habitant avec nous. Miam!

Yesterday we went to an organic market and interviewed the local producers to get as much informations as possible for our research. Every one we met was so nice and friendly. We also took time to work on our project and organise everything.

Hier nous sommes allé interviewer des producteurs locaux sur un marché organique à fin d'avoir le plus d'informations possible pour notre projet de recherche. Chaque personne rencontré fut très agréable, souriante et aimable. Nous avons aussi pris du temps pour préparer et organiser notre projet. 

Today we visited the Jade museum to learn more about the Costa Ricain Culture and the origin of the agriculture here. We interviewed local people but we got interrupted by the Tico (Costa Ricain) rain... We can now tell that we know how a rain season feels like...

Aujourd'hui nous avons visité le museum du Jade pour en apprendre plus sur les racines de la culture Costa Ricaine mais aussi sur les origines de l'agriculture. Nous avons interviewer des locaux avant d'être interrompu par la pluie Costa Ricaine... Nous pouvons désormais dire que nous savons ce qu'est une saison des pluies...

We also got prepared for our interview with Roberto Azofeifa the "Jefe del ministerio de l'agricultura y gardaneria de Costa Rica". We will meet him tomorrow at 7am at the Minister of agriculture.

Nous nous sommes également préparé pour notre interview avec Roberto Azofeifa le Jefe del ministerio de l'agricultura y gardaneria de Costa Rica. Nous le rencontrerons demain à 7h00 au ministère de l'agriculture.

Hi Guys ! 

After a stop in Miami  we arrived yesterday afternoon in san José after a very long travel... As we were exhausted we only get to go to the grocery shop and had a typical Costa Rican lunch. After a 14hours sleep we are ready to start our research project about agro ecology in Costa Rica ! Today we will visit an organic market. Despite the fact that we just arrived we are nicely surprised of the kindness and open mindness of the people here.

More news will follow soon !

Hi Guys !

Après une escale à Miami, nous sommes enfin arrivé hier après midi à San José... Étant très fatigué du voyage nous avons juste été au supermarché et nous avons déjeuner dans un petit "resto" typique Costa Ricain. Après avoir dormi 14 heures nous sommes prêtes a commencer notre projet de recherche sur l'agroécologie au Costa Rica ! Aujourd'hui nous allons visiter un marché organique. Malgrès le peu de temps que nous avons passé en ville nous sommes agréablement surprise par la gentillesse et l'ouverture des Costa Ricains.

Des nouvelles arriverons vite !
